A new moon ritual, step by step (10 minutes and a notebook)

A simple new moon ritual, no compulsory candles or crystals: how to write an intention you'll actually remember, plus the 2027 dates.

The new moon is the darkest night of the month: the moon sits between the Earth and the Sun and we can't see it. That's why it has always been the moment to begin: to sow an intention and let it grow as the light returns.

You don't need anything special. Ten minutes, a pen and a notebook.

Before you begin

  • When: the night of the new moon or the one after. There's no need to hit the exact time.
  • Where: a quiet corner. A candle if you like; if not, whatever light you have.
  • What: your journal, open at that day's page.

The five steps

1. Pause (1 minute). Sit down, close your eyes and take five slow breaths. Notice where you are today, without judging it.

2. Look back (2 minutes). Write two lines about this last cycle: what brought you joy, what weighed on you.

3. Choose a single intention (3 minutes). One, not ten. Write it:

  • in the present tense, as if it were already happening: "I go to sleep before eleven";
  • small and concrete, something that depends on you;
  • in the positive: what you want, not what you're avoiding.

4. A first step (2 minutes). What will you do tomorrow, however tiny, towards that intention? Note it in your week.

5. Close (1 minute). Read your intention aloud. Say thank you. Close the notebook.

And then: the full cycle

  • First quarter (a week later): have you taken the first step? Take another.
  • Full moon (two weeks later): look at what has grown and write three things you're letting go of.
  • Last quarter: tidy up and prepare the ground for the next new moon.

The secret isn't the perfect ritual: it's coming back to the same intention four weeks in a row. That's why it helps to have it written where you'll see it.

The new moons left in 2026 and those of 2027

For the rest of 2026: 9 November and 9 December. In 2027: 7 January, 6 February, 8 March, 7 April, 6 May, 4 June, 4 July, 2 August (with a total solar eclipse), 31 August, 30 September, 29 October, 28 November and 27 December. The exact times are in the 2027 lunar calendar.

I write my intention on that day's page of my journal, where every new moon is already marked with ●: that way it's right in front of me every morning.
