Every full moon has a name. The ones most used today come from the Native peoples of North America and from the settlers who recorded them in their almanacs: each moon was named after what was happening in nature that month. That's how people knew when to hunt, sow or harvest.

Moons with other names

  • Blue moon: when a month has two full moons. There are none in 2027.
  • Supermoon: a full moon near the point where the moon is closest to the Earth; it looks slightly bigger and brighter.
  • Blood moon: a full moon during a total lunar eclipse, when it turns reddish.

A game for this year

Give each full moon your own name, based on what's happening in your life that month: "Moving House Moon", "Long Walks Moon", "My Daughter's Moon". By the end of the year you'll have your own lunar calendar, written by you.

I note the name of each moon in my journal, next to its ○.
